You probably already know some of the potential health and weight loss benefits of coffee. We’ve also previously written about coffee’s many potential health effects in this post and also this post.

I recently heard of a new product on the market called Java Burn.

You dissolve Java Burn in your coffee to help you lose weight. Doesn’t that sound great? Drink coffee and lose weight!

I was intrigued so I investigated further.

I’m a bit of a science nerd so I wanted to delve into the science and not just take the advertised claims at face value.

This post is a result of that investigation and it may surprise you.

What’s Java Burn?

Java Burn seems to be a popular diet supplement in the market today. It may be written by some as Java Burn Coffee but it isn’t a coffee, it is added to coffee.

It has been used by many people who are trying to lose extra weight.

Judging by the website testimonials Java Burn has helped them to burn fat and get rid of those unwanted calories.

Java Burn comes as an easy-to-use powder that you simply dissolve into your coffee!

When taken with coffee Java Burn supposedly helps you reduce your body weight, boost metabolism, and burn more calories than usual.

Hang on…dissolve in your coffee? But I don’t want my coffee to be mucked up by adding powder. Won’t that affect the taste of my coffee?

Apparently not.

The people at Java Burn say that it is tasteless and dissolves instantly into your coffee.

And it can be used in any coffee without affecting taste.

Is Java Burn Safe?

Java Burn is advertised as being 100% natural, safe, and effective.

When I researched the ingredients (see later) I confirmed that they are natural and that most evidence indicates that they are safe to consume.

However, I’m wary of saying that anything is 100% safe. Why?

Well, everyone is different. People can develop allergies to anything. What may be safe for one person is unsafe for another.

You may also have a medical condition that makes you susceptible to caffeine or to any of the ingredients of Java Burn.

You should always be careful about your health.

If you have a medical condition then you should consult with your doctor before taking any supplement. We also mention this on our disclaimers page.

Is Java Burn Natural?

Java Burn is advertised as being 100% natural, vegetarian, gluten-free, and non-GMO.

GMO is an abbreviation for Genetically Modified Organisms.

My research on the ingredients confirmed that the ingredients are natural and suitable for vegetarians.

I can’t confirm that the ingredients are gluten-free or non-GMO because I haven’t seen the test results.

Java Burn says that they get every batch tested by independent third-party laboratories.

Where is Java Burn Made?

Java Burn is made in the USA in high-quality, FDA-approved, and GMP-certified facilities.

FDA is an abbreviation for the Food and Drug Administration in the USA.

GMP is an abbreviation for Good Manufacturing Practices.

Java Burn uses third-party manufacturers which means they don’t manufacture it themselves but get other companies to manufacture for them.

This is a good idea because you need high-quality and technically competent manufacturers that are regulated by Federal and State authorities to ensure cleanliness, sterility, purity of ingredients, standards, and safe working conditions.

How does Java Burn Work?

Java Burn is stated to work as a ‘fat burner’.

A ‘fat burner’ is a nutrition supplement that claims to increase fat metabolism, increase energy expenditure, impair fat absorption, and increase weight loss.

The mechanism of action of these fat burners and how they manage to achieve their effect (if there is an effect) is not clear.

There are many potential fat burners such as caffeine, carnitine, green tea, conjugated linoleic acid, forskolin, chromium, kelp, and fucoxanthin (PMID: 21951331).

There is evidence that caffeine and green tea increase fat metabolism but the evidence for other substances is uncertain (PMID: 21951331).

As we will see later, some Java Burn ingredients may also reduce appetite and reduce stress.

You may experience some stress when trying to lose weight. You may be stressed about the amount of food you eat, the type of food you eat, what people may think, and your self-esteem.

Consequently, it is important to try and reduce stress so that you can lose weight more effectively.

We already know the many potential health benefits of caffeine.

Java Burn seems to enhance and compliment the natural beneficial effects of caffeine.

The ingredients in Java Burn seem to be designed to do at least five things:

  1. Enhance the natural and beneficial effects of both caffeine and chlorogenic acid in your coffee
  2. Suppress appetite
  3. Reduce fat stores by increasing fat metabolism (a fat burner)
  4. Induce ketosis that stimulates fat metabolism
  5. Provide additional potential health benefits

All of this means that you get a potentially greater health benefit from your cup of coffee when taken with Java Burn.

I’ve written metabolism a couple of times but what is metabolism?

Metabolism is a network of thousands of enzyme-catalyzed chemical reactions occurring in a living cell.

Metabolism includes chemical reactions that break down chemicals or build chemicals in the cells of your body.

If something is a ‘fat burner’ then it usually means it stimulates or helps the breakdown of fats. When fat is broken down, especially in fat stores such as around the waist, you lose weight.

The following diagram shows you how Java Burn may help you lose weight. Just keep in mind that no one knows exactly how Java Burn affects metabolism.

How Java Burn May Work in Metabolism

How Much Java Burn to Take and When?

You don’t need to bother about measuring out a dose. You simply use the pre-packaged sachets.

Just one sachet of Java Burn powder dissolved in your cup of coffee per day.

You can take your dose of Java Burn at any time of the day.

It is completely up to you!

You probably need to take Java Burn continually if you want to see consistent results.

Scientific Evidence for Java Burn

A relatively simple human experiment needs to have at least two groups of people.

One group is the test and one group is the control. Each group is designed to have an equal number of people of similar age and health status. The number of people is important. The larger the number of people the more confident you can be of the results.

If a supplement is being tested then the test group is given the supplement but not the control group. The control group is given something that looks and tastes like the tested supplement and is called a placebo.

The two groups are then monitored over days, weeks, months, or even years. The duration of the test depends upon the expected time to see an effect (i.e. lose weight), the experimental design, and the number of people.

As of this writing, no human experimental studies have been done that show Java Burn can directly reduce weight. As far as I know, there are no peer-reviewed scientific studies or clinical trials on the efficacy of Java Burn on weight loss.

All the claims for Java Burn’s effect on helping you lose weight are based on experimental studies of individual components and not the whole Java Burn supplement.

The makers of Java Burn do cite research in support of their claims for fat burning and weight loss but these studies are for the individual ingredients in Java Burn.

Some components of Java Burn may have effects that ‘burn fat’ and induce weight loss and we will investigate individual components below.

There is also a possibility of a synergistic effect of all the components acting together in Java Burn.

That is, you may get a greater effect out of the combination of components in Java Burn compared with each individual component alone.

However, you should remember that no human experimental studies have been performed with Java Burn powder as a whole and individual results will vary. What will work for you may not work for others.

Now let’s look at the composition of Java Burn to see if there is any scientific evidence to support the claims for Java Burn.

What’s in Java Burn?

What are the ingredients in Java Burn?

The following is a list of ingredients in 2.5 g (one sachet) of Java Burn shown on the package label.

IngredientAmount
Vitamin D (cholecalciferol)20 mcg
Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine hydrochloride)1 mg
Vitamin B12 (methylcobalamin)5 mcg
Chromium (chromium chloride)20 mcg
Green tea leaf extract 200 mg
L-Carnitine100 mg
L-Theanine100 mg
MaltodextrinUnknown
Calcium silicateUnknown
Natural flavorsUnknown

The package label also states that there is 2 g of carbohydrate which accounts for most of the 15 Calories in Java Burn. Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate and may be part or whole of this 2g of carbohydrate in Java Burn.

What is mg and mcg?

In the table above the ingredients are measured by milligrams (mg) or millicentigram (mcg). Each is a measure of mass.

1 mg = 1/1000 g = 0.00003527 oz

1 mcg = 1/1000 mg = 1/1,000,000 g = 0.00000003527 oz

A millicentigram is an old unit of mass and is replaced by a microgram (µg). However, you still see mcg being used in some professions such as pharmacy and nutrition.

How Do The Ingredients of Java Burn Work?

I use Examine.com as my primary source of information about supplements. I trust these people because they are credible and reliable. Importantly, Examine.com reports all the evidence gained from scientific research on the efficacy of many supplements on human health.

Moreover, they are independent, unbiased, do not recommend any brands, do not advertise any products, and care about presenting valid scientific evidence.

So let us have a look at the ingredients of Java Burn to see if the evidence supports the claims for weight loss.

Vitamin D

Vitamin D is critical for human survival. The main natural source of vitamin D is the sun but it is also found in fish and eggs.

Vitamin D can reduce the risks of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, and multiple sclerosis. It increases bone health, the immune system, and induces a sense of wellbeing.

More importantly, for our context, is that Vitamin D may help fatter persons lose fat. However, there is insufficient evidence to suggest that Vitamin D reduces fat in lean persons.

Vitamin B6

Vitamin B6 is a necessary molecule for the metabolism of various chemicals in our body. However, there is currently no evidence to support that it is a ‘fat burner’ or affects fat metabolism in any way that would increase fat loss and reduce weight.

Vitamin B12

Vitamin B12 (also known as Cobalamin is essential for the body and seems to have a role in neurology.  However, there is currently no evidence to support that it is a ‘fat burner’ or affects fat metabolism in any way that would increase fat loss and reduce weight.

Chromium

Chromium is an essential mineral, that you get from your food. It is found in trace amounts in plant products, specifically grains. It is essential because you can’t live without it.

Chromium regulates insulin in the body. It is sometimes supplemented to improve insulin action in the body. This action would not induce weight loss because insulin acts to increase the store of fat.

Taking chromium with a proven therapy may help fight depression and the snacking associated with binge eating.

However, there doesn’t appear to be a significant nor reliable reduction in fat mass when people are given chromium supplements.

Green Tea Leaf Extract

Green tea (Camellia Sinensis) extracts contain water-soluble polyphenols (or catechins) and has many potential health benefits.

Green tea seems to help reduce fat but this effect is small and unreliable.

Green tea leaf extract may also the oxidation of fat leading to weight loss. This effect seems mainly due to the catechins in green tea.

Two clinical studies showed that Green tea extract was unable to produce a significant loss of weight in women.

It is difficult to know how green leaf extract may have an effect because the extract contains many active molecules. If green tea is seen to have an effect then we will not know if one, or combinations, of its individual components, is responsible for the effect.

Green coffee bean extract

Green coffee bean extract has a similar chemical composition to coffee beans. However, they have a much higher content of Chlorogenic Acid.

Chlorogenic Acid is the likely active substance in green coffee bean extract. That is, it is the molecule that is responsible for some of green coffee bean extract effects.

Once again it is difficult to know how green coffee bean extract may have an effect because the extract contains many active molecules. If green coffee bean extract is seen to have an effect then we will not know if one, or combinations, of its individual components, is responsible for the effect.

When green coffee bean extract was used in a clinical trial, it showed that it was mildly effective at increasing fat loss.

Other studies also indicate that green coffee bean extract may induce weight loss. However, there is a problem in that some of these studies were done by the producers of green coffee extract and may be biased.

L-Carnitine

L-Carnitine seems to help in liver disease, improve sperm quality, improve male fertility, and help women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

However, carnitine does not seem to do much for fat metabolism or weight loss.

Carnitine can help reduce fatigue which could lead to an increase in exercise and weight loss.

L-Theanine

L-Theanine is an amino acid that is found mainly in tea.

It is known to reach the brain and influence its function following oral ingestion.

Theanine reduces anxiety and stress. This allows you to relax and get better sleep.

You normally take about 100 to 200 mg of L-Theanine as a supplement.

Theanine may slightly offset the effect of caffeine and reduce the ‘jitters’ that some experience when drinking coffee.

In fact, a combination of theanine and caffeine (200 mg each) seems to promote cognition (thinking) and attention.

To ingest 200 mg of caffeine you would need to drink a triple shot of espresso coffee.

You can use our caffeine calculator to see how much caffeine there is in coffee and how much caffeine you may drink.

Caffeine

Caffeine is a component of Java Burn powder because Java Burn contains green coffee bean extract.  Caffeine is also an important and major component of your coffee.

Given that you dissolve Java Burn into your coffee then we should consider caffeine’s potential health effects.

Caffeine is a powerful stimulant, and it can be used to improve physical strength and endurance.

Caffeine can also increase the use of fat (burn fat) leading to a decrease in fat stores and weight loss. This effect is real but not as significant as its stimulatory effect.

Caffeine does not seem to suppress appetite in men. No similar studies have been done with women.

Maltodextrin

Maltodextrin is a carbohydrate and is probably responsible for the 2 g of carbohydrate shown on the list of ingredients. Carbohydrates can be burned by our bodies to immediately boost energy levels and performance.

Maltodextrin is safe but diabetics will need to monitor their blood sugar.

We don’t know what the ‘Natural Flavors’ are. It also seems weird that there are ‘Natural Flavors’ when Java Burn is advertised as ‘tasteless’. Maybe the flavors are very weak and you can’t taste them?

Calcium silicate

Calcium silicate is safe and is often used in baking as an anticaking agent.

Anticaking agents are added to foods to prevent caking, lumping, or aggregation and to improve the flow of powdered food.

Calcium silicate pulls water away from the rest of the ingredients, keeping the ingredients dry, and lump-free.

Natural Flavors

We don’t know what the ‘Natural Flavors’ are. It also seems weird that there are ‘Natural Flavors’ when Java Burn is advertised as ‘tasteless’. Maybe the flavors are very weak and you can’t taste them?

The Java Burn people state that there are no preservatives, fillers, binders, artificial colors, or antibiotics in Java Burn

Can you Make Your Own Java Burn?

You could go to your local pharmacy or nutrition store and find the ingredients yourself.

If you are lucky you can get the supplements packaged in the proportions mentioned in the table of ingredients. If you are unlucky then you would need to weigh out tiny amounts. How would you weigh 20 mcg in your kitchen?

Alternatively, you need not stick to the amounts used in Java Burn but simply take the closest equivalent along with your usual coffee.

However, you will need to be careful and check with your medical practitioner before taking any supplement.

Conclusion

Java Burn may help you burn fat. It seems safe to consume and it may offer you other benefits such as reducing stress.

Let’s summarise some of the main ingredients of Java Burn and what they may be able to do for you.
