1. Kahvesi

Kahvesi

Kahvesi (or Türk Kahvesi), also known as Turkish coffee, is a wonderfully dark, rich, sweet and unique coffee. You can vary the sweetness if you wish. The ‘Sade Kahve’ coffee does not have any sugar and is bitter. The ‘Az Şekerli’ coffee has about a half teaspoon of sugar. The ‘Orta şekerli’ coffee has about a teaspoon of sugar and is less bitter. The ‘Çok şekerli’ coffee has about two teaspoons of sugar and as you may expect is very sweet.

Brew the coffee grinds directly in water in a copper pot with a thin handle (called a cezve) and let them settle to the bottom of the cup before serving. You don’t use filters to prepare this coffee, so you will probably drink some of the fine coffee grinds (yum?).

It is traditional to serve Kahvesi with a thick layer of dark foam on top and with sweet treats such as Lokum (Turkish Delight) or chocolate.

Use a petite fork to hold the cheese in the espresso for a little longer to soften it up, and enjoy a unique coffee dessert that rivals the flavor profile of tiramisu.

5. Affogato

Italy is one of the biggest coffee cultures on the planet.

I mean, why else would the entire world decide to adapt cappuccinos and latte? Because they made it, and damn they made it good.

Put gelato in the bottom of a glass cup, pour over hot espresso, and you have a unique coffee affogato. Top it off with your choice of whipped cream or fruit spread.

It’s decadent, but it just goes to show how versatile coffee is and what you can include it in.

Mexico’s take on a unique coffee is to add a little spice.

Brew the coffee in a clay pot because this is what gives the coffee part of its flavor profile.

Toss in your dark brown sugar and spices, and you’ve got a health-boost coffee that can have cream or sugar added to sweeten things up.

You can find different varieties depending on the recipe used or the coffee shop you visit.

Let’s take a flavor trip to Vietnam and explore their unique coffee. Here they take something you would usually never pair with coffee and mix it right in: egg yolks.

Separate the egg yolks from the egg white and add the yolks to the strong robusta coffee with condensed milk and sugar. Yep, sweet as, but robusta has a powerful flavor compared with arabica coffee.

You’re basically creating a thin custard-like additive, and it really packs a punch.

If you were to make this at home and add it to arabica coffee, it’s going to be strong and sweet.

8. Cafezinho

Brazil is home to the largest coffee farms in the world, and it’s where we, as Americans, get most of our coffee from.

This unique coffee drink is basically small shot-like cups of strong coffee, similar to espresso.

The Brazilians roast the beans practically right out of their backyards. Consequently, there’s less processed flavor, and you get earthy, nutty elements straight in the shot.

Mix in a few teaspoons of milk or cream to cut some of the bitterness, and get a glorious color.

9. Yuenyueng

If you ever visit Hong Kong, this is your unique caffeinated safe haven whilst on your trip.

This blends a small amount of coffee with a large amount of milk tea, giving it a slightly sweet taste, as well as a variety of flavors to choose from.

You can get fancy with additives, though you’ll most commonly see honey, sugar, and cardamom.

You can serve hot or cold, to match your preference, but a cold Yuenyueng may be a good idea in a humid Hong Kong.

The spiced coffee of Saudi Arabia—it’s made by boiling the ground beans in water for ten minutes and then adding in loosely crushed cardamom and cloves.

In America, we try not to let coffee reach within ten degrees of boiling, so this is a hardcore unique coffee that your tastebuds are certainly going to feel.

Strain the coffee, serve, and boost your health with the added spices. Exotic!

Germans love their coffee, and they’ve made this beverage with a slightly alcoholic twist.

You have less than a single shot of rum in your unique coffee, so this is something you can have in the early afternoon without feeling tipsy afterward. If anything, it’ll just relax you.

Add steamed milk to one or two shots of espresso, with a little foam, and you have your flat white coffee.

Folks who like a flat white either don’t like too much froth or want a milky thirst-quenching coffee. If you are a fan of froth you can always have a cappuccino!

13. Kopi Joss

The Kopi Joss is a hardcore unique coffee drink, not so much for the coffee but for its preparation.

Make coffee any way you want, but be sure to add some sugar.

Pour it into your sturdy cup, give it a little stir, oh yeah, and then add a sizzling hot piece of charcoal into your coffee.

Let the coal sit for one or two minutes until the coffee basically caramelizes before your very eyes, remove the charcoal, and drink.

Just a heads up, it is supposedly directly imbuing carcinogens into your coffee but it’s got to be one of the most insane coffees we’ve ever heard of and it comes straight out of Indonesia.

14. Mazagran

Fan of iced coffee?

Portugal is about to make your head spin with what some call the ‘original’ iced coffee.

Mix espresso, sugar, water, rum, and lemon juice (or mint) and you have your Mazagran!

Pop a lemon wedge on the edge of the glass and a mint leaf in, and you’ve got your new summertime favorite coffee drink.

There’s only a one-ounce shot of rum in here, so you’ll feel a little zing, but it won’t slow you down.

Why It’s Hard to Recreate All of These at Home

You can do your best to recreate these unique coffees in the comfort of your own kitchen, and experience another culture. However, you may have difficulty with some of the coffees.

Most of the countries featured in this article source their own coffee beans, making them closer to nature, less processed, and fresher.

It’s also culturally different.

You couldn’t expect to pick up on a coffee-making technique from halfway across the world, where they’ve practiced it for centuries, and just nail it on the first go.

There’s something about actually experiencing coffee in another country and the way that they brew it that’s truly magnificent.

If you’re planning on traveling, then sharing in the local morning coffee community is like dropping yourself into the day-to-day of your destination country.

By all means, mix it up in the kitchen and attempt some of these delicious coffee variants. However, if you get the chance head to the country of origin to experience it firsthand!
